Transition to Wikivoyage

For those who are interested: today I pointed the WikiSherpa server away from wikitravel.org and towards wikivoyage.org, as per recent events.

iTravel is dead. Long live WikiSherpa!

The latest iteration of the app comes with that most fundamental of changes, a new name. Why? Well, largely due to a trademark dispute, which frankly I think was bogus, but fighting it didn't seem worth the time and money that would be required. And I think the new name might be better. Welcome to WikiSherpa!

Since bandwidth has gotten cheaper over the last couple of years, I've also restructured the app so that you can bulk-download all of Wikitravel (and its associated Wikipedia pages) even from the free version. The only difference between the free version (WikiSherpa) and the paid version (WikiSherpa+) is that the latter is (and always will be) entirely ad-free.

Hope you like the changes, and have fun out there!

Most Popular

A little data for you, courtesy of Google Analytics: the 100 most-viewed destination pages on iTravel/iTravelFree over the last 30 days. Of interest:
  • A whopping 49 of them are in Southeast Asia.
  • 19 more are European cities.
  • The remaining 32 are scattered as you might expect.
  • All of them are English pages except for a mere one, in Japanese. I would have expected several German pages to crack the top 100.

Happy New Year, iTravellers! I released a new iOS version this month, a new Android version just today, and I'm now hard at work on FourSquare integration. Look for that come the new year!

Android 4.0

G'day, iTravellers. Just wanted you to know that the new 4.0 version of the Android app, with a relatively flashy new interface and a few bug fixes, is now out and available in the Android Market. Enjoy!

And the redesign begins

Hola, iTravellers. I've decided to get rid of the complicated message-board structure I've had going for the last year or so and replace it with this simple blog. Comment away if you have bug reports, feature requests, or other commentary!

In the meantime, a quick update: I'm back from my own travels (two months spread across Ethiopia, Kenya, Djibouti, England, France, and India - see my personal blog for details and pictures) and busy updating the app again.

Android version 3.6, which is out now, and iPhone Version 3.4, which should hopefully be approved by the App Store by the time you read this, include a bunch of helpful UI tweaks, such as indicating which pages or sections or empty, and automatically setting the map to show your last category selection; an option to view a hierarchical tree of the pages you've downloaded, instead of just a flast list; links to Yelp and TripAdvisor in eat/drink/buy and sleep listings, respectively, when online; a new "About" page that shows you how much of your precious space the app is using; and more!

So give 'em a whirl, and if you run into any bugs, please email me at
itravel@rezendi.com posthaste, and I'll fix 'em before you know it.

Thanks!
